The Three Basic Laws for Leading Successful Mergers
At the risk of oversimplifying things, there are the three fundamental laws for successful merger integrations:
-
Give the people good reasons for wanting it to work.
If the people who still have jobs want the merger to work, there’s a good chance it will. If they don’t want it to work or don’t care, the odds change dramatically. The issue here is motivation.
-
Show the people how to make it work.
Employees at all levels need training and coaching, from top executives struggling to manage uncertainty and change, to the rank-and-file employees confused by cultural differences and new procedures. They’ll be asking, “What do I need to do? How do I handle this?”
